Patton Flemming Lackey, 75, of Waco, passed away on January 31, 2023.
Patton, better known to family and friends as Pat, was born to Joseph and Frankie Lackey, on April 19, 1947, in Cameron, Texas.
Pat graduated from Lott High School in 1965. After graduating high school, he enlisted in the Air Force where he served from 1966-1970 as an aircraft mechanic with the rank of Staff Sergeant. Pat’s time in the military was largely spent in Europe, and in Germany, in particular. Pat had a great sense of humor and always had a story to tell, one of his favorites, was about how he ended up in Libya for a week which coincided with the “Six-day war” and as he liked to say, “he was there for the entire war with orders to guard the perimeter with a wrench and a flashlight.”
After serving in the Air Force, Pat attended school at Texas State Technical Institute where he graduated in 1972 with a degree in aviation maintenance. Upon graduation, Pat took a job as an aircraft mechanic and moved to Laredo, Texas; however, it would not be long before Pat would make a career change and go into business for himself. While going to school, Pat worked at Jack-N-Jill donut shop in Waco, where he would develop a friendship with Mr. Warren, the original owner. The connection with Mr. Warren and his business led Pat to decide to change careers and franchise a donut shop that would take him to Longview in East Texas where he would live most of his adult life. Several years later, Pat once again made a career change, where he became a spray technician spraying the railroad tracks over much of the United States. After more than twenty years of doing this, Pat made yet another career change and once again went into business for himself where he became a “hot shot” driver. Pat continued to drive until his health wouldn’t allow him to do so any longer.
Pat is survived by his son, Adam, and his wife, Jo, along with his grandson, Caleb. He is also survived by his brother, Ira “Gene” Lackey, nieces Billie Farley, and Terry Harris, and nephews Joe Lackey, and Kenneth Harris Jr. Pat was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Frankie, along with his sister Jodie
Pallbearers will be Caleb Lackey, Joe Lackey, Aaron Towns, Doug Moneypenny, and Gary Moneypenny.
Patton’s visitation will be held on Friday, February 10, 2023, 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Cook-Gerngross-Green-Patterson funeral home in Rosebud, Texas. The funeral services will also be held at the Cook-Gerngross-Green-Patterson funeral home on the following day, February 11, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the American Cancer Society in Pat’s name.
