Doris Burns Downes, 89, formerly of Rosebud, passed away on Wednesday, September 30, 2020, at Accel Nursing Center in College Station. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday at Cook-Gerngross-Green-Patterson Funeral Home in Rosebud. Rev. Don Fulton will officiate. Burial will follow in Clover Hill Cemetery in Lott, next to her daddy.
She was born January 15, 1931 in Lott, Texas to Lorenza and Tennie Wiggleton Burns. She lived most of her life on the farm outside of Rosebud. Besides farming and raising turkeys, she also worked at the Heritage House Nursing Home and at Dr. Halbert’s hospital in Rosebud. She was a personal caregiver most of her life. At the age of 11, she took over the full-time position of mother to her baby sister, Lucille and 3 young brothers, Johnny, Perry and little Buddy. As an adult, she cared for her mother and father and Aunt Mary Pomykal until the end, as well as numerous others in the area.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Leonard, Perry, Buddy, Grady, and Johnny, sisters, little Mabel, and Barbara McKinnon, and one son-in-law, Ray Clyde.
She is survived by three children, Carolyn Sue Clyde of Huntsville, James and Valeska Downes of Florida, Doris Mayer and David Gaines of Cameron, and 2 foster sons, David Carter of Maryland, and Dan Carter of Franklin. 13 Grandchildren, Kristin and Greg Pirkola and Trevor Downes and David Kastillo of Florida, Lisa and Daniel Evans of College Station, Kelli Gilmore of Salado, Bryan and Ashley Mayer of Alaska, Chris and Lindsey Gaines of Austin, Jason and Lori Gaines of Bellville, Kyle and Grace Carter of Maryland, Daniel and Jillian Carter and Beth Carter of Bryan, Terry Clyde of Pennsylvania and Sheri Clyde of Huntsville.15 Great Grandchildren, Jackson Evans, Laila Pirkola, Titus and Hanna Marshall, Weston and Truitt Carter, Anne Marie and Drew Gilmore, Nathan and Savannah Mayer, and Connor, Avery, Malcolm, and Lincoln Gaines. She is also survived by 1 sister, Lucille Moss of Cameron and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended relatives.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
