David Lawrence Thompson, 67, of Albany, formerly of Snyder, passed away Saturday, December 12, 2020, in a Lubbock hospital. There will be a memorial service planned for David at a later date.
David was born November 4, 1953, in Snyder, to David Gene and Norma Sue (Adams) Thompson. Much of his early years were fun filled days at the creek on his Pawpaw Oran and Grandma Velma’s farm, that he loved so much. He was a 1972 graduate of Snyder High School and graduated from Texas Tech University in 1976, with honors. While he was in high school he lettered in basketball and baseball. David was always very nostalgic about his high school years, loved reminiscing with old friends, and remained close to them. One of the highlights of past years was always the annual dove hunt and cookout at the Thompson farm, where a multitude of old friends came for that first weekend of dove season. He loved those times with them. At Tech, he was on the dean’s list all four years, and a member of the ATO Fraternity, where he was President his senior year. He was a businessman in Snyder for many years and active in the Chamber of Commerce, as well as other civic organizations. David was a 32 nd Degree Mason and a member of Colonial Hill Baptist Church.
The greatest source of pride and joy in his life were his children. Whether it was sports events, school events, or even piano recitals, he was always there rooting them on. Growing up, you could find David coaching their baseball or little dribbler’s teams or just throwing the baseball around. It was here that he instilled his love for sports and a spirit of excellence. He loved and took pride in being “Pops” to his three grandchildren. One of his favorite things was spending time with them and encouraging them on in all of their endeavors.
David leaves behind his children, Trevor Thompson, of Whitney, Tate and Nikki Thompson of Albany, and Robyn Thompson of Cleburne; two sisters, Jeannine Merrifield and husband, Edmund, of Graford, and Lisa Bowden and husband, John, of Bentonville, AR. He was a loving “Pops” to grandchildren, Karter and Kylan Thompson, and Parker Tanner. He was the best “Bubba” to his nieces, Jeannifer Whittaker, Julie Barnes, Claire Bowden, and Annabelle Bowden. David will also be missed by a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one nephew, Jeffrey Barnes.
