Bettie Freeman Mohney

April 4, 1924 — May 21, 2019

Bettie Freeman Mohney

“And still the wonder grew. How one small head held all she knew” said her school yearbook.

A 4 th generation Texan born in Cameron, Milam County, on April 4, 1924 to Cornelia Tyson McGuire and William Clement Freeman.  Died May 21, 2019.

She felt blessed by her childhood growing up in a “Bobbsey Twin” family.  Her mother, who had been a school teacher before marriage had two sets of boy- girl twins three years apart.  She grew up riding horses and playing sports.  She played croquette and ping-pong which she later enjoyed with her children & grandchildren.

All four twins graduated from SMU and had careers in education.  Bettie retired from Garland ISD.  She earned her Masters Degree from Stephen F. Austin University while teaching.

Bettie was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, David W. Mohney, sister Jane Evans, twin brother Dr. Bill Freeman, brother John Freeman and grandson Jacob Millington.  Survived by daughters Claire Kowalski (Bob), her twin Nelia Millington and Lesley Mohney.  Grandchildren Emily Fahim (Bassem) and Kyle Kowalski, two great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Her faith was most important to her.  David and she were founding members of Lake Highlands United Methodist Church.  She was active in United Methodist Women, Lamplighters Circle and the Gleaners Sunday School class.  She was a member of Church Women United and the Lake Highlands Book Club, which started in her church.

She believed in volunteering.  She was a Camp Fire leader, held PTA offices, taught in the church’s children ministries and was UMW president.  She was in at the beginning of March of Dimes, UNICEF, Meals on Wheels and the Arboretum through her Highland Hills Garden Club.  She enjoyed reading, cooking, gardening, flower arranging, bridge and crossword puzzles.

We will remember her as a thoughtful, caring daughter, wife, mother and grandmother.  We will think of her when we see sunsets, butterflies, hummingbirds and cardinals.

Burial will be in Little River Cemetery in Milam County.

Her family will attend the 11:00 service at Lake Highlands United Methodist Church on  Sunday, May 26, 2019.  There will be a short remembrance to celebrate her life at 12:30 p.m. in the chapel.  Everyone is invited to refreshments afterwards in the church foyer.
