Graveside services for Mr. Larry Eugene “Schafe” Schafer, 64, of Laporte, Tx, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 28, 2015, at the Little River Cemetery near Cameron. Mr. Schafer died Saturday, February 21, in a Houston hospital, following an illness.
Mr. Schafer was born October 29, 1950 to Donald Jack and Mildred Inez Canady Schafer, in Houston, Texas. He was a singer/songwriter.
Mr. Schafer is survived by his wife, Penny Schafer, of Laporte. He is also survived by two sons, Shawn and Scott Schafer, also of Laporte.
His story, as told by his son, Shawn, is an inspiring one:
He was a walking miracle for a decade. He was diagnosed with pancreatic and liver cancer and given 5 months to live. Instead of accepting this grim prognosis he got with God and asked what he could do? He knew that death then would leave too much unfinished business and that his family was not prepared for him to pass! In strong prayer Schafe found God’s answer and it was posed as a question. God had given him so many talents but, which of those talents had Schafe used in the glorification of his maker??He then knew what he had to do! He needed to utilize his talents as a singer/songwriter to glorify his maker and that is exactly what he did with every bit of the strength that he had left! Ten years later he has an album released through Tate Music called SCHAFE-CHOOSE FAITH and materials for two more albums and a book called SILENT PRAISES by SCHAFE. Shawn wishes to thank you if you were a part of his journey and he prays that God blesses you just as he blessed his father. When Schafe went to be with the Lord, the timing was perfect! His family were there jamming his music! He went out very peacefully during track #7 on the CD called QUIET MOMENTS, which was very fitting because that is the song that he always said that he wanted played at his funeral and if you know the lyrics to that song, then you understand the significance:
“Quiet moments, when my Lord visits me,
Quiet moments, when my soul is set free,
Quiet moments he hears my heart with sympathy,
Quiet moments, just him and me.”
Green-Patterson Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
