Paul James “P.J.” Hoelscher
PJ passed away on October 29, 2014 at the age of 84 in the Rosebud Nursing Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 3, 2014, at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Rosebud. Father James Robertson and Deacon Wilbur Hoelscher will officiate. Burial will be at Westphalia in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
PJ was born in Barclay, TX on January 12, 1930 to Kate Ocker and Emil A. Hoelscher. He attended elementary schools at Barclay and Sneed Kasner. He graduated from Rosebud High School in 1947. He received his BS and MA degrees from North Texas State Teachers College
PJ served two years in the U.S. Army Signal Corp spending one year in Japan. He played baseball with the Westphalia Farmers in the Cen-Tex and McCloskey Leagues. He also was a good softball pitcher. He pitched for many teams in Rosebud & Kiwanis Club in Temple. He loved playing golf at the Calvert Country Club.
PJ was a teacher/coach and principal in the Rosebud and Rosebud-Lott school Districts for 35 years; he continued to teach Driver Education for 44 years.
He and his family managed the Rosebud Summer Baseball Program for over 25 years. A little league field is named Hoelscher Field in his honor. He and his family received the Citizens of the Year Award from the Rosebud Chamber of Commerce.
He married Doris Kleypas on August 5, 1956.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Raymond and Gene Hoelscher.
He was a member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Rosebud where he served as a lector and Eucharist Minister and received the Diocesan Lumen Gentium Award. He was a charter Member of the Knights of Columbus Council # 9743 in Rosebud, a member of the V.F. W. and the Rosebud Volunteer Fire Dept for 25 years. He was the treasurer of the R.H.S. Golden Year Reunion for 14 years and received the RHS Distinguished Alumni Award. He received a plaque from the R.H.S. Class of 1960 which read “Our First and Favorite Coach”
He is survived by his wife, one son, Dr. Ron Hoelscher and wife Terri of Austin, two daughters, Donna Staten of Round Rock and Diana Wimberley and husband Steve of College Station, six grandchildren, Callie, Claire, and Carson Hoelscher, Ryan Staten, Mason and Grant Wimberley.
Visitation will be held 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. Sunday, November 2, 2014, with a rosary to follow at Cook-Gerngross-Green-Patterson Funeral Home in Rosebud.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Anne’s Catholic Church Building Fund, 85 Church St. Burlington, TX 76519.
