Irene Michalewicz, 92, of Rosebud, died Monday, June 17, 2013 in a Temple Hospital. Services were held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday in St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Rosebud. Rev. Walter Dhanwar and Deacon Charlie Wright officiating. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Lott.
Irene Michalewicz was born November 19, 1920 in Farlington, KS to Herman and Elizabeth Werberger Kruger. She was educated in Cherokee, KS and Los Angeles, CA. She worked as secretary to the Chief of Police in Los Angeles. She enlisted in the Women’s Reserve of the US Navy in 1943. She attended Hunter College in New York and Oklahoma A&M in Stillwater, OK. She was assigned to the executive office of the Secretary of the Navy in Washington, DC where she spent the remainder of the World War II years.
She met her future husband, Herbert Michalewicz, who was assigned to the Pentagon Building in Washington. They were married on December 31, 1947. He preceded her in death on June 20, 1997.
She was a devoted wife and mother and did volunteer work with handicapped children and adults. Being an artist and teacher of art brought her much joy.
She is survived by two daughters, Dorothy Setzler and husband, Dr. Frank Setzler, of Tyler and Nancy Michalewicz and husband Bruce Biermann of Austin. Five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Amy Michalewicz, and nine sisters and brothers.
Memorials may be made to Sacred Heart Cemetery or charity of choice.
Rosary was recited at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday in Cook-Gerngross-Green-Patterson Funeral Home in Rosebud.
