Funeral services for Mr. Von Wright Hickman, age 90, of Houston, and formerly of Cameron, were held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday in the Kathryn W. Green chapel of Green-Patterson Funeral Home with Reverend Billy Crow officiating. Burial followed at Walker's Creek Cemetery. Mr. Hickman died Thursday, June 30, 2011, in a Houston nursing facility following an extended illness.
Mr. Hickman was born August 29, 1920, in Cameron, to Jesse Wright and Mae Vaughn Hickman, and was a retired machinist foreman at Forsyth Engineering Company. Mr. Hickman grew up in Cameron and graduated from C H Yoe High School in 1938, and entered the United States Army in 1941 and served until he was medically discharged in 1943. Mr. Hickman served in the Army paratroopers. Mr. Hickman married Hazel Nadine Weems June 22, 1941, in Maysfield, and moved to Houston in 1943 and worked for Sheffield Steel prior to working for Forsyth Engineering Company from whom he retired when he was 55. Upon retirement Mr. Hickman moved back to Cameron where he became a rancher until the age of 79, at which time he moved into town to enjoy playing golf for the next decade of his life. Mr. Hickman was a member of the Cameron Country Club and the First United Methodist Church.
Mr. Hickman was preceded in death by his wife Hazel Nadine Weems Hickman in 2006, and is survived by a son Ronald Hickman and his wife Judy of Pearland. Grandsons include Paul Hickman and wife Jenny, Scott Hickman, Neal Hickman and wife Melissa, and step grandson Steve Knight and wife Traci. Great Grandchildren include Juliana and Jake Hickman and Tyler and Eli Knight.
The Family received visitors on Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Green-Patterson Funeral Home in Cameron.
Family has requested that those wishing to do so may make memorial contributions to the National Kidney Foundation @ 30 East 33rd St. New York, NY 10016.
