Funeral services for Mrs. Iona H. Guthrie, age 77, of the Tanglewood Community, near Lexington, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at the St. John’s United Methodist Church, in Rockdale, with Reverend John Warren officiating. Burial will follow in the Guthrie Family Cemetery in Milano, Texas. Mrs. Guthrie died Saturday in a Round Rock Hospital.
Mrs. Guthrie was born July 9, 1934, in Roy, New Mexico, to Edwin H. and Faye Ross Hughes, and was a retired school teacher, having taught 15 years in the Lexington and Thorndale Indepenedent School Districts. Mrs. Guthrie taught Sunday school and played the piano, and sang in the choir, at St. John’s United Methodist Church in Rockdale. Mrs. Guthrie was a member of the Eastern Star in Rockdale and volunteered at the Lucy Hill Patterson Library in Rockdale.
The light of her life was her grandchildren, Tennyson, age 20, who is to graduate from Blinn Junior College this May and Stonie Lyn, who is on her way to becoming valedictorian of her class in Milano. Mrs. Guthrie never missed a ballgame or any event that involved her grandchildren.
Mrs. Guthrie is survived by her son Melton and his wife Iris, of Milano, her daughter Karla G. Fuchs, her husband David, of Round Rock, a brother Marion Hughes of Pasco, Washington, and her two grandchildren Tennyson and Stonie Lyn Guthrie of Milano.
A family visitation will be held Wednesday evening from 5-7 p.m. at the Green-Patterson Funeral Home in Cameron. The family has requested that those wishing to do so may make memorial contributions to the charity of their choice.
